Our mission in Haiti
From 1972 to 2002, SMB missionaries served in Haiti through pastoral, educational, and technical work, in close collaboration with local communities and lay missionaries.
Between 1972 and 2002, four SMB confreres worked in Haiti for varying lengths of time in the dioceses of Port-de-Paix, Cap-Haïtien, and Gonaïves. The two missionary priests were engaged in integral pastoral work, while the two missionary brothers placed their craftsmanship skills at the service of vocational schools and the construction sector. One missionary brother lost his life in a tragic swimming accident in 1989.
In Haiti, SMB worked closely with the Community of Lay Missionaries (GLM), based in Villars-sur-Glâne in the canton of Fribourg.
