Word of God

The light of the Star of Bethlehem continues to shine in our time, wherever the Gospel takes root.

The Children Who Would Not Dance, and the Wisdom That Is Justified by Her Children

Every village square has the same scene. One group of children starts a game, and another group sits on the edge and will not join. Nobody is shouting, nobody is being cruel; they simply refuse to pla...

She Did Not Faint, She Stood: Our Lady of Sorrows and the Home That Began at the Cross

Yesterday the Church lifted the cross high and sang to it as to a throne. Today she comes down to its foot, where the view is quite different, and finds a small group of people standing in the dust wi...

Bronze in the Desert: Why God Healed His People by Making Them Look at Their Own Wound

In an emergency camp the most important object is often the one placed highest: a flag, a lamp, a sign on a pole, something that can be seen from ground level by people too weak to stand up and walk t...

Ten Thousand Talents, and the Man Who Thought He Had Only Been Given More Time

Anyone who has ever owed money knows the strange arithmetic of debt: the total keeps running in the back of the mind, even during sleep, even at meals. Today's Gospel begins with a man doing sums out ...

The Measure Pressed Down, Shaken Together, and Poured Into the Fold of Your Cloak

In an old market, a buyer would hold out the fold of his cloak and the seller would pour the grain into it, press it down with his fist, shake the basket so the kernels settled into the gaps, and then...

Blessed Are You, Now: Luke's Beatitudes Spoken to the Faces Standing in Front of Him

Some words are spoken about people, and some are spoken to them. Today Jesus does the second thing: he raises his eyes, finds the faces of his own disciples, and speaks in the second person, singular ...

The Birthday the Gospel Never Mentions, and the Village Too Small to Be Counted

A birthday is always celebrated backwards. We only discover which days deserved to be marked once we see what grew out of them, and by then the day itself has long since passed unnoticed. Today the Ch...

A Withered Hand in the Middle of the Room, and the Question Nobody Wanted to Answer

Paul writes to Corinth about bread. A very little old yeast, he says, sours the whole batch, and the community that shrugs at it will taste the difference in everything it bakes. Then he lifts the ima...

The Shortest Walk in the Gospel

There is a distance in today's Gospel that is easy to miss because it is so short: the few steps between your door and the door of the person you have something against. Jesus begins there, and he wou...

The Grain They Rubbed in Their Hands

It is a small scene, easy to walk past. Men crossing a field, pulling off heads of grain as they go, rubbing away the husks between their palms, eating what is left in the hollow of the hand. Five ver...
